The Case for One-Thumb Games

The Case for One-Thumb Games

May 8, 2026 · Marek Novák

I do most of my mobile gaming standing on a tram, holding a rail with one hand. That reality shapes what I actually keep on my phone, and it turns out one-thumb design is harder than it looks.

Good one-thumb games put every action within reach of a single finger without hiding critical buttons in corners. Racing games that force tilt controls fail this test instantly for me. Arcade titles that map everything to taps tend to win.

This is also why some deep strategy games struggle on phones. If a game needs two thumbs and full attention, it competes with everything else in your day and often loses.

When I review, I always test a game standing up, one-handed. If it survives that, it survives real life.
